Palate Palette and I, we go a long way back. We were first introduced in 2007, when I attended my friend’s Valentine’s Day party for singles. I had never been to a singles party before, and I didn’t see the point of one. Turning up, however, was perhaps the best thing I did that year. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have fallen in love with this artsy spot and unashamedly asked for the owner Su Ann Wong, to “offer” my painting services (which at that point in time was mostly done on canvas, not walls). Being as thick-faced as I am, I had no problems rocking up to a party and making myself right at home by wanting to put my mark on the walls of this gem of a restaurant. There were not many walls left to paint by that time, so Su Ann gave me the alleyway walls leading to the bathrooms upstairs. In case you’ve yet to visit Palate Palette, the multiple door locks in both bathrooms are a unique feature, and they sparked my design concept right on the spot. Many Lapsap parties (electro, techno and ‘80s inspired sounds), Sunday BBQs, birthday parties, countless dates (part of the date criteria checklist includes Palate Palette appreciation), photo-taking frenzies and design brainstorming sessions later, Palate now holds many great memories for me. Whenever I needed a break from the rest of the world or wanted to mingle with honest people from all walks of life, I found solace at Palate.
Being the Industrial Designer Nurul Jannah is, she lives to create things regardless the medium. With a wide spectrum of interests from candid social photography, napkin scribbling (walls too!), mentally stimulating conversations with random people to obscure indie music solo-karaoke (oh yes she just made that one up), she doesn’t conform to the masses and is always on the lookout for new creative challenges.
